Attorney
Services and Responsibilities:

Welcome to the official website for the office of the Stevens County Attorney. The County Attorney is an elected position and the term is four years. This office has many criminal and civil legal responsibilities. We enforce local ordinances and state and federal laws. Our adult and juvenile prosecutions typically include assaults, property offenses, criminal sexual conduct, and DWIs. In every case we review the investigation completed by law enforcement. If the matter needs to be prosecuted, we file complaints or petitions with the court and represent the state in hearings and at trial. As a prosecutor, I have discretion in making charging decisions. I take that responsibility very seriously and every case is diligently studied so that the right decision can be made.

In addition to criminal prosecution, our office is responsible for:

  • Advising the County Board of Commissioners, County Officials, and County Departments.
  • Litigating Child Protection cases and enforcing truancy laws.
  • Civil actions for forfeiting property used in connection with criminal matters.
  • Civil commitment of individuals who are mentally ill or chemically dependent and pose a danger to themselves or others.
  • Bringing actions to obtain or enforce child support obligations, or to establish the paternity of a child, in order to obtain reimbursement for assistance and other costs to the taxpayers, for little to no cost
  • Starting legal proceedings to protect the health and safety of vulnerable adults within the county when they are in need of assistance.
  • Victim assistance, including advising crime victims of their legal rights, request restitution for losses suffered, and advise on emergency assistance.

It is an honor and a privilege to serve in this capacity and be in a position to help ensure that Stevens County remains a safe and healthy place to live and work.
