Stevens County District Court is one of 13 District Courts in the Eighth Judicial District of the Minnesota Judicial System. There are presently l l judges serving the Eighth Judicial District and the Honorable Gerald J. Seibel is currently chambered in Stevens County.
Sandee Tollefson is the appointed Court Administrator for Stevens County. The Court Administrator serves as the Clerk of District Court and as the Jury Commissioner.
The following case types are processed and tried in the District Court:
Civil - includes, among others, cases such as lawsuits involving personal injury, property damage, malpractice, employment issues, wrongful death, implied consents, as well as Tax Court.
Conciliation Court - more commonly known as Small Claims Court. Claim amount limits are presently set at $7,500.00.
Criminal - includes processing of complaints for violations of law from minor to major offense types, which includes Petty Misdemeanor, Misdemeanor, Gross Misdemeanor, and Felony offenses, as well as traffic and parking violations.
Family - includes dissolution, custody, support, paternity, domestic abuse, and adoption cases.
Juvenile - includes cases involving minors under the age of 18 who are involved in delinquency, termination of parental rights, truancy, status offenses, runaway, and children in need of protection, as well as some traffic offenses.
Probate - includes supervised and unsupervised probating of estates of decedents, guardianships of minors and adults, conservator ships, and commitments for mental illness or chemical dependency.
