History: Organics Recycling in Stevens County

This brief history provided in collaboration with the Waste Interns in the UMN-Morris Office of Sustainability and their ongoing documentation of the waste story in Stevens County, MN. Stevens County Organics Timeline

2008 - Composting program initiated by students at UMN-Morris

2011 - Food waste sorting and weighing started in Dining Hall at UMN-Morris. 

2012 - UMN-Morris staff and students attended the Midwest Composting School in Ames, IA. 

2014 - Compost sifter was purchased at UMN-Morris to sift out unwanted materials from the finished compost.

2015 - UMN-Morris Dining Hall goes Zero Waste, all items used by students are reusable or compostable.

2016 - PDSWM receives MPCA grant to implement Organics Program.

2017 - Morris Area Schools works with UMN-Morris to dispose of cafeteria organics for composting.

2021 - Stevens County Environmental Services applies for MPCA Environmental Assistance Grant 

First Organics Pickup route by Engebretson Disposal (Dec 2021)

2022 - 100,000 lbs total of organics delivered to the Glacial Ridge Compost Facility (Aug 2022)

First organics recycling available at the Stevens County Fair (Aug 2022)

Household Organics Recycling Dropsites opened (Oct 2022)

2023 - 200,000 lbs total of organics delivered to the Glacial Ridge Compost Facility (Feb 2023)
